How many of you remember your childhood days when you are told by your parents to offer தோப்புக்கரணம் to Lord Ganesha? Remember??? even in some schools they made us do this as a punishment.......
This procedure is almost stopped and I really doubt how many of us had taken the efforts to pass it on to our kids. I need to stress this point here because I myself did not seriously consider making my son do this everyday. The reason being I did not know really anything about this amazing thing and how playfully we were taught to do this. Just because it is taught playfully, without telling the real reason, I think we did not consider this seriously. Now I am telling with confidence, after reading this, you will all try (at least try) to do it everyday and will also tell your kids to do it.
First, to briefly mention, தோப்புக்கரணம் is always offered to Lord Ganesha. Why Ganesha specifially? Why not other gods? You will come to know this at the end of this article.
Before that, please take a look at how it has become "Super Brain Yoga" now and its popularity...

You might also google "super brain yoga" and see the number of articles for this தோப்புக்கரணம் which we did playfully and for free but without knowing its benefits. Let us know why to do it this. In Sanskrit karanam means ears. Ear lobes has connection with brain and can activate the brain when we pull it gently. Left ear activates the right brain and right ear activates the left brain. Why hands crossed? because if only the left ear is pulled with right index and thumb fingers and vice versa, this activation happens.
Please go to this link to learn more about this entire procedure of brain activating process. Dr. Paul Nogier MD, a neurologist spent 20 years doing medical research to find out the connection. Chinese have also used those ear lobes as their acupuncture points.

Now let us see why Ganesha specifically is offered this தோப்புக்கரணம். Since it activates the brain and is connected to improved memory, it somehow relates to education and knowledge. But why not it is offered to Goddess Saraswathi when she is depicted as god of knowledge but to Ganesha? Maha periyava explains this with few points.
1. Vinayaka is pranava swaroopam. Pranavam is the foundation of all sounds and letters.
2. His another name is "Ganapathy" which means the head for all the "ganam". Ganam has many meanings. In language context (according to "vyakaranam which means grammar") Ganam" means "all the letters that come under the same rule" and Ganapathy is the head for it.
3. He is the writer of Mahabaratha (the author being Vyasa) which is the lengthiest poem ever written. It is known as the fifth Veda. Since the four Vedas are only told in oral form, this fifth Veda is only in the written form and the same is done by Ganesha.
Another explanation is that two main attributes of Ganesha are "Sidhi" and "Bhudhi". Here "Bhudhi" means "intelligence, intellect or wisdom".
