Mathematics In Chamakam

It has been very long since I wrote a post in this blog. But I am constantly researching about science in sanatana dharma. My brain is always inquisitive to learn more and more about our scriptures and the hidden meanings behind them.

Some time back, I had an opportunity to attend "Maha Rudra Maha Yagna" in sanatana dharma temple, Artesia, California. Ridwiks chanted Rudram Chamakam throughout the yagna. Though I have heard Rudram Chamakam many times before, this particular yagna paved way to look at this great Mantra in an entirely different way. To give a brief idea, this mantra has numbers in it. It specifically talks about odd numbers from 1-33 and multiples of 4 from 4-48. So? What's so special about it? It is from Taitriya Samhita from Krishna Yajurveda. This mantra is taken from one of the 4 Vedas, (Vedas as such do not have a beginning or an end) and the concept of mathematics is discussed here, precisely in odd numbers and multiples of 4. It is really astounding to note this. We are in a belief that mathematics came into existence once humans are evolved (as per evolution theory) and when civilization started. But it was discussed in this mantra which originated from the Krishna Yajurveda. Sanatana Dharma time cycle is infinite and cyclical, so are the vedas. That makes it really special.

Now lets venture deep into this specific mantra, as it is even more incredible to note the meaning. It comes in the Eleventh Anuvaka (chapter) of Chamakam. I will first provide the full mantra and it's literal meaning before we dive into the deep interpretation and the many possible theories. So, here it is :

Chamakam - Eleventh Anuvaka :

"Eka cha may, thisra cha may, panchas cha may, saptha cha may, nava cha may
Ekadasa cha may, tryodasa cha may, pancha dasa cha may, saptha dasa cha may, Nava dasa cha may, eka trimsathis cha may, tryovimsathis cha may,
Pancha vimsathis cha may, saptha vimsathis cha may, nava vimsathis cha may,
Eka trimsathis cha may, tryatrimsathis cha may, pancha trimsathis cha may,

Chathasras cha may, ashtou cha may, dwadasa cha may, shodasa cha may,
Vimsathis cha may, chatur vimsathis cha may, ashtaa vimsathis cha may,
Dwathrimasthis cha may, shat trimsas cha may, chatvarimsa cha may,
Chathus chathvarimsa cha may, ashta chatvarimsa cha may"

Literal meaning of the above mantra :

Let Rudra grant me these : one, three, five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen,  fifteen, seventeen, nineteen, twenty one, twenty three, twenty five, twenty seven, twenty nine, thirty one and thirty three.

Let Rudra grant me these : Four, eight, twelve, sixteen, twenty, twenty four, twenty eight, thirty two, thirty six, forty, forty four and forty eight.

TWENTY FOUR: The number of letters in the Gayatri chhanda or metre.
(It is a metre of three feet or padas, of eight syllables each, giving a total of twenty four syllables. The three pada length is unusual. Thus, it is sometimes also called as Tripada-Gayatri. However, in some non-vedic hymns, it can also manifest as four padas (usual length) of six syllables each.)

TWENTY EIGHT: The number of letters in the Ushnik chhanda or metre.
(This metre is named after the 7th horse pulling Surya's chariot. It is of four padas of seven syllables each. Thus, resulting in a twenty eight syllable stanza.)

THIRTY TWO: The number of letters in the Anushtup chhanda or metre.
(This metre is the one which is usually used at the beginning of sanskrit hymns. It is of four padas of eight syllables each. Thus, resulting in a thirty two syllable stanza. )

THIRTY SIX: The number of letters in the Brihati chhanda or metre.
(This metre is also of four padas. However, all the padas are not of equal length. The third pada is of twelve syllables while the rest are of eight syllables each, resulting in thirty six syllables in a stanza. )

FORTY EIGHT: The number of letters in the Jagati chhanda or metre.

Connection to Science :

The purpose of this blog is to see the science behind Sanatan Dharma concepts. Hence I always try to research when I find unique notions. As such, the projection of numbers in Chamakam kindled my curiosity. Why only odd numbers until 33? Why only multiples of 4 from 4-48? Why not other numbers? Is there a reason for this? or just coincidence? According to me, nothing is said simply in our scriptures (This is my faith and you can very well disagree) but they have deep hidden meanings. As such, these numbers should also have something hidden in them. So I went online to do some research. What I found really amazed me. Take a look :

According to Dr Sasidharan :

"These numbers represent a polymer chain of molecules that form apa or water that enables evolution of life and intelligence, and apa is nothing but the nitrogenous base pairs of the DNA.   The numbers 1 to 33 represent the 33000 base pairs of mitochondrial base pairs of DNA.  The numbers 4 to 48 represent the 48 million nuclear bases of DNA.  The two sets of DNA bases combine to provide sustenance of human well being and onward evolution of human life. When the devotee prays for the blessing of these numbers, actually he is praying for bestowing on him all these DNA bases which conduce to sustenance of human well being and happiness."

Water is the basis of everything. All of our scriptures emphasize the importance of water. Creation starts and ends in water. "Mantra pushpam" also emphasizes water as the base for everything. It is interesting to note that this mantra is also from the Yajurveda. You can read the literal meaning here.

http://connectsciencetodivinity.blogspot.com/2015/04/mantra-pushpam-chants-from-yajurveda.html

There is no proof as of now to prove this theory that states that there is a link between Chamakam and DNA. But if a meticulous research is conducted by one who is well versed in both traditional Vedas and modern Science, I am sure that we can easily figure out the exact link between these numbers and what they represent. The purpose of this blog is to make youngsters understand our scriptures in a logical and scientific way so that they take pride in their tradition and have curiosity to do more research on the scriptures rather than terming them as superstitions. The Vedas and other scriptures are very rich in terms of knowledge and these should be passed to our future generations. It is just a small effort from my side. Thank you all for reading.

Chakras - The Energy Centers

Let us enter the marvelous world of mysterious "Chakras" today. The sanskrit word "chakra" literally means "wheel". It can also be taken as "circle".  We all have seven Chakras in our subtle body, which are widely known as "Energy Centers" these days. To tell the long story short, the main Shakthi (energy), called "Kundalini" is activated in the "Muladhara Chakra" (Root) and arises little by little, passing all the chakras. When it ultimately rises to the top "Sahasrara Chakra" (Crown), the "Sakthi" (energy) reunites with "Shiva" (consciousness) and the ultimate state called "Samadhi" is attained.

Tantra, Mantra and Yantra :

These are considered as the three basic techniques of worship in "Sanatan dharma".  "Tantra" uses body as a medium. Yoga postures and techniques basically come under this category. The "Chakras" which we are going to explore today also come under this "Tantra" section. "Mantra" uses mind power. The sounds and vibrations caused by them are the key factor here. All our Vedic Mantras and Shlokas come under this section. "Yantra" uses objects as medium. Objects which are considered to possess and attract unique mystical powers are worshiped. "SriYantra" is considered as one of the most powerful yantras. This "Sriyantra" is itself an excellent topic of research and needs to be explored in detail.

Kundalini - The Serpent Power :

Please read the following passage, (source - wikipedia).  Kundalini is excellently described by none other than "Swami Vivekananda" in his "Raja Yoga" lectures given in London.

"According to the Yogis, there are two nerve currents in the spinal column, called Pingalâ and Idâ, and a hollow canal called Sushumnâ running through the spinal cord. At the lower end of the hollow canal is what the Yogis call the "Lotus of the Kundalini". They describe it as triangular in form in which, in the symbolical language of the Yogis, there is a power called the Kundalini, coiled up. When that Kundalini awakes, it tries to force a passage through this hollow canal, and as it rises step by step, as it were, layer after layer of the mind becomes open and all the different visions and wonderful powers come to the Yogi. When it reaches the brain, the Yogi is perfectly detached from the body and mind; the soul finds itself free. We know that the spinal cord is composed in a peculiar manner. If we take the figure eight horizontally (∞) there are two parts which are connected in the middle. Suppose you add eight after eight, piled one on top of the other, that will represent the spinal cord. The left is the Ida, the right Pingala, and that hollow canal which runs through the centre of the spinal cord is the Sushumna. Where the spinal cord ends in some of the lumbar vertebrae, a fine fibre issues downwards, and the canal runs up even within that fibre, only much finer. The canal is closed at the lower end, which is situated near what is called the sacral plexus, which, according to modern physiology, is triangular in form. The different plexuses that have their centres in the spinal canal can very well stand for the different "lotuses" of the Yogi.[20]"

Ida, Pingala and Sushumna - The Three Subtle Nadis :

There are three important "Nadis" called "Ida", "Pingala" and "Sushumna", within the spine. "Ida" is lunar channel and associated with "feminine" properties. "Pingala" is solar channel and associated with "masculine" properties. Both these Nadis represent the "duality" in existence which we call as "Shakthi" and "Shiva". The "Sushumna" nadi is in the center, between Ida and Pingala. At the lower end of this "Sushumna" Nadi, lies the "Root" chakra. This is where the dormant "Kundalini" energy rests, like a coiled serpent, waiting to be awakened. Through systematic "Pranayama" and deep "Meditation", this energy is awakened. Once awakened, this energy has to be carefully taken step by step to the upper chakras. A yogi can such attain ultimate bliss or samadhi, when he takes "kundalini" to the top "Crown"chakra.

Shiva's Snake - A Symbolic Representation :

We all know that Lord Shiva has a snake around his neck. There are many symbolic interpretations for snake. One such interpretation in this context is that, the snake stands for the fully awakened "Kundalini" energy. Shiva is often pictured in yogic posture. As an all accomplished yogi, the fully awakened "serpent power" is typically represented by the snake around his neck.

Read the following for better understanding :

Before proceeding further, I encourage you to watch the following three video clips about these energy centers :

Chakras In Detail :

"Muladhara" - The Root Chakra :

By Léah 30 (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0 (http://

via Wikimedia Commons

This is the Root chakra. If the root is strong, it can hold anything. Since this is the base chakra from which the energy arises to the top, it got the name "Muladhara". It is located in the base of spine, below the coccyx. It is red in color and has 4 petals. Dormant "kundalini" energy rests here. This chakra is responsible for basic survival instinct. As such, it governs stability, sensuality, security and spirituality. The three Nadis which we saw before lie near this chakra and it is from here, they begin their upward journey.

This chakra is located two finger-widths above the "Muladhara" chakra. The color of this chakra is orange and it has six petals. The element associated with this chakra is "water" and the seed syllable is "VAM". This chakra governs emotions, pleasure and reproduction. It is believed that it is very hard to take the "kundalini" past this chakra because "sexual desire" is the hardest to control. Since this chakra governs that, extreme determination is required to battle that desire and fix one's mind in the end goal. A person who concentrates and meditates on the "Svadhishthana" chakra is believed to attain the following powers :

  • Freedom from enemies
  • Loss of fear of water
  • Psychic capacities
  • Perfect control of negative emotions like anger, jealousy etc
  • Creative imagination and eloquence

This is the chakra which is located slightly above the the navel. It has ten petals and the seed syllable is "RAM". It is yellow in color. The element associated with this chakra is fire. In physical terms, this chakra governs digestion and emotionally,it is associated with power. Imbalance in this chakra causes negative emotions like fear, confusion, lack of confidence, depression and unwanted worries. A yogi who activates this chakra by bringing the "kundalini" energy up to this point overcomes all the above negative feelings.

The sanskrit term "Anahata" literally means "Unstruck". This chakra is located in the chest. It is green in color, has twelve petals and has "YAM" as the seed syllable and "Rakini" as sakthi. This chakra is responsible for love, compassion and soft emotions involved in human relations. In physical terms, this chakra govers circulation. When this chakra is activated, one can express unconditional love, compassion to all creatures, and accept people as they are without judging,

The literal meaning of the term "Vishuddhi" is "extremely pure". The location of this chakra is the throat. The seed syllable is "ham"and it has 16 petals. In physical terms, this chakra is responsible for communicaiton. In spiritual terms, this chakra takes care of "sense of security". Since this chakra governs communication, it is extremely important to a person who wish to activate this chakra to not speak harsh, not talk too much, pronounce mantras accurately and so on. All these things help in opening up this chakra bit by bit. It can only come through regular practice. When this chakra is activated, one can get a very compassionate voice and excellent communication skills. If you get complete control over this chakra (which can only happen with extreme meditation practices), you can attain "Vaaksidhi" which means, what ever you say will come true/happen.

Ajna - The Third Eye Chakra :

By Atarax42 (Own work) [CC0], via Wikimedia Commons

Before proceeding further about this chakra, let us quickly think about "Lord Shiva". He is also known as "Mukkannan" which means one who possesses three eyes. The third eye is nothing but the fully activated "Ajna" chakra. The literal meaning of "Ajna" is to command. The location of this chakra is behind the forehead, which is the seat of consciousness. We can say that this chakra possesses extreme importance. The reason being, this chakra is the point where the two Nadis, Ida and Pingala (which were separate all along), merges with the central "sushumna". Spiritually, it can be taken that this chakra is where the duality ends and pure consciousness with the supreme being is established. It is rightly represented with two petals, symbolizing the duality, viz.. darkness and light, male and female, subject and object, etc.

Another important point to emphasize here, is Hindus always mark their foreheads with holy ash, kumkum, chandhan etc. It is actually a way to protect this place (forehead where ajna chakra is located) from negative aspects from external factors, and to activate this chakra by gently pressing this area when applying those forehead marks. For a detailed information about this, please click the following link.

http://connectsciencetodivinity.blogspot.com/2015/04/forehead-marks-why-do-we-apply-them.html

The seed syllable of this chakra is the "Pranava", the "AUM". The Sakthi is Hakini and the presiding deity is "Ardhanaareeshwara" (again, a symbol of merging duality). Ajna covers basic intuition in physical terms, and spiritually, it governs visual consciousness.

Sahasrara - The Crown Chakra :

By Atarax42 (Own work) [CC0], via Wikimedia Commons

The literal meaning of "Sahasrara" is "Thousand petaled". As the name signifies, this is a thousand petaled chakra. It is the state of pure consciousness, where there is no duality. If the kundalini energy rises up to this point, Samadhi/liberation is attained. Moksha is attained by many paths viz. Karma, Bakthi, Gyana, Yoga etc. By uniting the Kundalini energy with the male "Shiva" energy, one attains Moksha by Yogic path.

It is a state of pure bliss, where one becomes immortal and eternal. The illusion of individual self is totally dissolved at this point. A person who attains this stage is never born again. He is said to have conquered the infinite cycle of births and deaths. In all the previous chakras, "form" was still present. Even in Ajna chakra, "form" was present along (though mild) with consciousness. It is at Sahasrara chakra, where the mind establishes itself in the supreme Bindu/Pure Void. At this stage, there is no knowledge, no knower and nothing has to be known. The ultimate goal of taking a human birth is attained. A yogi becomes unified into the one supreme being.

 Chakras in Shlokas :

Two important shlokas, the Lalitha Sahasranama and the Soundara Lahari, talk about these chakras and the kundalini shakthi. Lalitha Sahasranama describes how Devi resides in each chakra in different forms, her characteristics in each chakra etc. For instance, if you take the following shloka,

"Vishuddhi chakra nilayarakthavarna thrilochana
Kathvangadhi praharana vathanaika samanvitha
Paayasaanna priya tvakstha pasuloka bayankari
Amruthadi mahasakthi samvrta dakineeswari"   - Names 475-484

This verse talks about the Vishuddhi Chakra. It is said that the yogini (shakthi) for this chakra is Dakini. Her complexion is mild red. She has three eyes. She is fond of the sweet "payasam". She presides over skin and sensation of touch. She is frightful for those who are ignorant of self. She is surrounded by 16 shakthies (resembled by the 16 petals).

Some effects of aroused kundalini :

If you want to attain something in life, you should always make compromises. Happiness does not come without suffering. These are general statements of life.Same principles apply to Kundalini Shakthi too. Before one can feel the ultimate ecstasy, one has to undergo many side effects, which are even painful at times. Please take a look....

Side Effects :

  • Involuntary jerks, tremors and shaking
  • Itching and crawling sensations
  • Feeling of energy rush
  • Extreme heat or cold felt in the body
  • Headaches and pressures inside the skull
  • Nausea, diarrhea or constipation
  • Unusual breathing patterns

Feelings of Ecstasy :

  • Visions of sounds. You can actually hear the mystic Pranava sound "AUM"
  • Feelings of infinite love and bliss
  • Extrasensory experiences
  • Out of body experiences
  • Altered states of consciousness
  • Past life memories and astral travel
  • Sense of unity with one supreme being

Not to be practiced without a Guru :

It is always said that spiritual realization can happen only with a Guru. This reveals the importance of Guru and almost all our scriptures have mentioned and praised Gurus. Until British invasion, our education system was also called "Gurukula" where students stay at the place of Guru and learn under his guidance.  Though we lost this tradition in modern days, it is emphasized even now that yoga, meditation and such other spiritual practices should always be practiced under the guidance of a Guru. There is a famous saying, Maatha, Pithaa, Guru and Deivam. Mom is the first person a child knows and understands. To that child, mom shows the Dad. Dad takes the child to a specific Guru to enrich him with wisdom and knowledge. Guru is a person who reveals God to that child. Hence, our elders have given this nice order. It is strongly advised that kundalini should not be practiced without the guidance of a Guru. It is considered as a very risky and extreme yogic practice, due to the many side effects associated with this. Due diligence and care has to be taken when a person practices kundalini yoga. Even a single mistake can lead to many complications. Hence, please take the guidance of a Guru if you wish to practice this yoga, which activates the subtle powers and helps in reaching the ultimate goal of self realization.

I wish you all readers a very Happy New Year. Let this year bring health, wealth, peace and prosperity to all.

Thamboolam - Amazing Medicinal Qualities Hidden Behind This Simple Ritual

Exploring the science behind Sanatan Dharma traditions and rituals have come a long way these days. Gone are the days when we said that all these are mere superstition. Of course, we cannot deny the fact that even now, there are people who say that these are superstitions. But, the awareness to know the reasons behind such rituals have increased among people. Nowadays, they are trying to search for logical answers to their questions regarding spiritual rituals and as long as they get convincing answers, they are happy to take them. The motive of this blog is an attempt in that direction. I try my best to bring out the logical and scientific reasons behind Sanatan Dharma rituals. But the credit for today's topic goes to one of my friends, Rajeswari, who asked me to find out the significance of Thamboolam, that we offer during any pooja, festival or family functions. Thanks to her for suggesting such a wonderful topic,  I am amazed to see the information I got, when I went in search to gather more details about this ritual. Now I see betel leaf from a very different perspective. I am sharing the same with you today......

We offer Thamboolam during many occasions. During a Puja, we offer it to the invoked deity, as a part of Shodasa Upachara. Please click this link to know more about this 16 fold worship :

http://connectsciencetodivinity.blogspot.com/2015/09/invoking-deity-during-puja.html

During marriage and other special occasions, we offer thamboolam to guests. We also offer the same when we host a feast.

Thamboolam basically refers to Betel leaf, nut and lime (chunnambu), when we talk in the context  of food. But during a Puja or when we offer the same to guests during wedding and other special occasions, we also add fruits (bananas), coconut, flowers and turmeric. Let us explore these items individually from spiritual and scientific perspective, as applicable. This will give us a better understanding.

Significance of Betel Leaf :

In India, Betel leaf is associated with Goddess Lakshmi. The center part is considered to be the seat of Lakshmi and hence it is considered a sin to chew the center part. The tip of the betel leaf stands for longevity and the base portion for fame.

Betel leaves are good source of Vitamin B and Carotene. It is packed with anti-oxidants and aids in good digestion. The leaf produces an aromatic volatile oil containing a phenol called chavicol which has powerful antiseptic properties. Betel leaves are given to women after childbirth to increase secretion of milk.  Other traditional uses of betel leaves are given below :

Betel leaf in Ayurveda :

In Ayurveda, the importance of betel leaf has been mentioned in many texts including Chakra Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. In Ayurveda, there are three doshas called vatha, pitha and kapha. Betel leaves pacify Kapha and Vatha dosha while increasing Pitha dosha. These leaves are prescribed for various reasons....

  • Enhancing metabolic functions
  • Expelling mucus
  • Treating ulcer
  • Improving appetite
  • Strengthening the heart muscles
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Purifying blood
  • Treating bronchitis
  • Treating bleeding gums

Significance of Betel Nut (Areca Catechu) :

Before proceeding with the uses of Betel Nut, I would like to mention a word of caution. Betel nut should not be taken alone, as it will cause anemia and intoxication. Excessive usage of the same will even result in oral cancer. Careful selection of betel nut should be employed. Unripe nut, much ripened nut, dampened nut, insects laden nuts with holes are to be avoided. Fresh, tender and immature nuts should not be consumed. When properly selected nut is chewed along with betel leaf and lime, it provides many health benefits. It removes Phlegm (Kapham) and relieves constipation. It increases the flow of saliva, strengthens the gums and sweetens the breath. It destroys the germs and cures hemorrhoids.

Significance of Lime (Chunnambu) :

Lime is a good source for calcium and it is used along with betel leaf and nut. It should not be consumed in excess as it will cause oral ulcers, burning sensation of stomach, diarrhea and vomiting. Lime is obtained from many sources, but the most important among them is from lime stone. It is purified by soaking in lemon juice and then prepared for use. The lime is considered to neutralize the astringent effect of the acid nut. Using the lime stone variety aids in the digestion of food. It strengthens the teeth. Using the pearl lime cures chronic diarrhea, phlegm, worms and diseases of the stomach.

Significance of Coconut :

Coconut is always used in temples as offering and in various pujas. The reason being it has great spiritual significance. Let us explore some of them. We always use seeds to plant trees. But for growing a coconut tree, we need to use the whole coconut. It is pure as it is not tasted by anyone with the seed remaining, It also symbolizes selfless service. Every part of the tree is used in many ways. It even converts the water taken from earth into sweet nutritious water that is beneficial in many ways. Breaking of coconut symbolizes breaking of one's own ego. The three eyes in the coconut represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva. The following links provide a good idea about the spiritual importance of coconut...

Metaphor Between Cosmic Dance Of Shiva And Dance Of Sub Atomic Particles

We all know that Nataraja is the dancing form of Lord Shiva and he is considered as the supreme God of "Naatya" - dance. Tandava, the divine dance performed by him is the source of creation, preservation and destruction. But do we know that this dance has an amazing scientific concept hidden in it? Let us close our eyes for a second and think about Atom and its Spin. Can we draw some amazing connection here?? Yes, we can and that is the base idea of this article. It tries to establish the parallels between Shiva's cosmic dance and Subatomic spin.  As usual, I have already found that I am not the only one to look at mythological concepts from a scientific perspective, but there are many many people who have already thought about these ideas. Hence I have website links to share, which can throw a good insight into the subject matter. Let us proceed further......

QUICK VIEW :

Key conceptShiva's cosmic dance compared with dance of subatomic particles
Spiritual perspective Tandava, the dance of Shiva ; Lasya, the dance of Goddess Parvati ; the different kinds of dances, Soundaryalahari - verse 41 which talks about Shivasakthi dance.
Views of modern physics Atoms, Subatomic particles, Movements inside an atom, Electric Universe, Views of Fritjof Capra, Nataraja statue at CERN, European center of Nuclear research
Parallels Sub atomic particles compared with "Trinity" Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva ; The spin inside atom compared with the cosmic dance of Shiva which is the source for creation, preservation and destruction

Tandava :

The name "Tandava" actually came from "Tandu" an attendant of Shiva, who taught 108 "karana"s to Baratha, the author of "Natya Shastra". "Karana" is the combination of hand gestures with feet to form a dance posture. These 108 karanas are discussed by Baratha in the 4th chapter ("Tandava lakshanam") of "Natya Shastra".

Tandava symbolizes the cosmic cycle of creation and destruction. It deals with the following five principle manifestations of eternal energy :

  • Shrishti - Creation
  • Sthiti - Sustenance
  • Samhara - Destruction
  • Tirobhava - Illusion
  • Anugraha  - Grace, blessing

There are many types of "Tandavas". The most famous among them is "Aananda Thandava" which portraits bliss and ecstasy and "Rudra Thandava" which portraits destruction and violence.

Lasya :

"Lasya" is a gentle form of dance performed by Goddess Parvati. It is filled with grace and beauty She performs this dance in response to Shiva's "Tandava". There are two kinds of this dance namely "Jarita Lasya" and "Yauvaka Lasya".

Soundaryalahari  (Shloka 41) describes Shivasakthi dance :

Soundaryalahari, is not only a Shloka (prayer) but also a textbook of "Tantra". It describes about many Yantras and gives instructions on Puja and offerings. In that Shloka, verse 41 talks about Shivasakthi dance in Muladhara chakra. According to "Kundalini Yoga" there are six main Chakras in human body where "Kundalini" energy arises from the bottom to the top. In each chakra, Shiva and Sakthi reside in different forms. As such, Sakthi resides as "Samaya" (performing Lasya dance) and Shiva resides as "Aananda bhairava" (performing Tandava dance) in Muladhara chakra. Here it is considered as the creation dance and Shiva Sakthi are termed as Janaka Janani (father and mother). Please click the following link to read the entire text and meaning of this particular verse 41 :

And watch the following video clip (from start to 0.19 seconds) :

Atoms - Basis for everything in the Universe :

Atoms are the tiniest particles which constitute the base for everything in this Universe, from air to water, whale to mobile phone and so on.....Every solid, liquid and gas is made up of atoms. Without atoms, there is no existence of life. Such atoms are further divided into subatomic particles called Protons, Neutrons and Electrons .

Subatomic particles vs. Trinity personification :

Many world traditions make a mention about "Trinity" with reference to God. Specifically, in Sanathan dharma we have the main trinity, "Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva". We always refer them as Mummoorthy. Similarly, we also have a female version of trinity called "Sarasathi, Lakshmi and Parvati". These female Goddesses are termed as energy sources for the male Gods, to perform their tasks, Creation, Sustenance and Destruction respectively. We also talk about Parabrahmam, the Supreme God, who is beyond everything. The trinity gods are only the acting agents of the Supreme formless God. This can be understood from the popular tamil saying "அணுவுக்குள் அணுவான ஆதாரமே ".....

Now let us apply this philosophical thought to the subatomic particles. If atoms are everything in this Universe, and if there could not be any life existence without atoms. then can we say the subatomic particles are symbolically referred as "Trinities called "Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva???? When we look closely into the properties of the subatomic particles, we can somewhat agree to this concept. Among the subatomic particles, Protons have positive electric charge, Electrons have negative electric charge and Neutrons have no electric charge

Let me share the links which provide a connection between Trinity personification and Subatomic particles. Generally they emphasize "Proton" with positive electric charge as "Vishnu ; "Electron" with negative electric charge as "Brahma" and "Neutron" with no electric charge as "Shiva (but there are variations in these).  Please carefully go through the following links to make your own judgement about this concept. This is just an idea...... an attempt to analyze the deep concepts of philosophy in relation with modern science..

Atomic Spin :

Look at the above video and observe the movements inside an atom. If we say dance is nothing but movement, everything in this Universe dances, Sun, moon, planets, stars and the smallest of small, atoms too. Not only atoms, but even their subatomic particles move. Without such spin, there is no atom at all. And if there is no atom, there is no life at all.

Fritjof Capra :

He is an Austrian born American Physicist and the founding director of "Center for Ecoliteracy" in Berkely, California. He is also an author of many books. His famous work, "The Tao of Physics" which talks about the parallels between modern physics and eastern mysticism, was written in 1975.
Very recently, he has explained that....

"Modern physics has shown that the rhythm of creation and destruction is not only manifest in the turn of the seasons and in the birth and death of all living creatures, but is also the very essence of inorganic matter. For the modern physicists, then Shiva's dance is the dance of subatomic matter."

This is the statue of Shiva, engaged in dance in the form of Nataraja at CERN in Geneva. This statue, symbolizing Shiva's cosmic dance of creation and destruction, was given to CERN by the Indian Government to celebrate the research center's long association with India. A special plaque next to the Shiva statue explains the significance of the metaphor of Shiva's cosmic dance with quotations from "Fritjof Capra"......

"Hundreds of years ago, Indian artists created visual images of dancing Shivas in a beautiful series of bronzes. In our time, physicists have used the most advanced technology to portray the patterns of cosmic dance. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art and modern physics".

Watch this video clip which talks in detail about Shiva's cosmic dance (The introductory Shloka is Vishnu Sahasranama though.....) :

I am not able to provide certain links as they are very long to copy and paste. But if you type "Shiva cosmic dance atom" in google, you can find lots of interesting information about the same. I encourage you all to search and find more details about this beautiful symbolic representation. This is just a starting point where we have got some parallels between mythology and modern science. But I am very sure that more and more science advances, more and more light will be thrown on our ancient philosophical treasures. Thank you all for reading and please don't forget to share your thoughts.

Rig Veda And Speed Of Light

Vedas - the ancient treasures of India, are researched through out the world these days. Not only because of the rich spiritual concepts but also for the astonishing scientific facts hidden in them. It is generally said that Vedas need to be interpreted properly to get a better understandng. Reason being, one cannot get the in depth meaning by just reading the verse or hymn. Only a spiritual master, guru or a sanskrit pundit can pass the knowledge of light along with the wisdom. Remember, knowledge without wisdom will aid only in destruction rather than construction. Our ancestors understood this completely and that's the reason why they had maintained these resources with great care and passed the knowledge only to those who truly deserve and have obtained enough mind maturity to use the ideas for constructive purposes only. We are here to discuss one such hymn of the Rig Veda which talks about the speed of light. Astonishing, isn't it??? After reading this article, you will realize the above fact that Vedas need to be interpreted correctly in order to obtain the detailed hidden meaning. Let us proceed now....

A sample page from the Rig Veda
See page for author [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

The Verse -  (Rigveda 1;50-4) :

तरणिर्विश्वदर्शतो जयोतिष्क्र्दसि सूर्य |
विश्वमा भासिरोचनम ||

TaraNir vishvadarshato jyotishkrdasi surya |
Vishvamaa bhaasirochanam ||

Simple Meaning :

Ralph T.H.Griffith, translated Vedas in the English language. His interpretation of the above verse is given here :

"Swift and all beautiful art thou, O Sūrya, maker of the light,
Illuming all the radiant realm."

Detailed Interpretation :

Sayanacharya (1315-1387) , was a minister who flourished under king Bukka I and his successor Harihara II, in the court of Vijayanagar Empire in South India. He was an important commentator of the Vedas. More than 100 works are attributed to him including these commentaries. In his commentary about the Rig Veda verse 1;50-4 (given above) , he mentions the following phrase.

"Tatha cha smaryate yojananam. sahasre dve dve sate dve cha yojane
Ekena nimishardhena kramaman namostuthe"

which means.....

"Accordingly, it is remembered/declared here that it (sunlight) traverses 2202 yojanas in half a nimisha (in half a twinkling of eyes). Oh Sun, I bow to you."

Calculations :

Vishnu purana describes units of time as follows :

1 Nimesha = 1 blink of an eye (0.213 seconds approx)
1 Kastha = 15 nimesha (3.19 seconds)
1 Kala = 30 kastha (95.85 seconds)
1 Muhurtha = 30 kala (2875.5 seconds = 47.92 minutes)
1 Ahoratra = 30 muhurtha (1437.75 minutes = 23.96 hours)

Hence half a nimesha is 0.213/2 = 0.1065 seconds

Yojana - the unit of distance as described in Vishnu purana :

8 Yava = 1 angula
12 Angulas = 1 vitasti
2 Vitastis = 1 aratni
4 Aratnis = 1 danda/danu
2000 Danus = 1 Krosha
4 Kroshas = 1 Yojana (approximately 9 miles)

SPEED OF LIGHT :

According to Syana, light traverses at 2202 yojanas in half a nimesha. Which is calculated as follows:

                                         2202 * 9 (miles)
                                         --------------------       = 186084 miles per second
                                         0.1065 (seconds)

Also take a look at this video. Details about Sayana comes in the end...

Speed of Light in Modern Astronomy :

Ole Romer, in 1676, first demonstrated that light travels at a finite speed by studying the apparant motion of Jupiter's moon. He estimated the speed as 220000 kilometers per second (136701 miles) which is about 26% lower than the true value. The estimated speed of light according to modern astronomy now is 186000 miles per second.

Coincidence or True knowledge ?

So modern astronomy states the speed of light as 186000 miles per second while Syana's calculations come to 186084 miles per second (roughly). Isn't it astonishing to see how close the values are? Can it be just a coincidence? or is it true knowledge which we are slowly losing? It is time to think, realize and take steps to protect our ancient treasures and pass the knowledge to the future generations. As already told in the introduction, this knowledge sharing has to be done with proper care, along with teaching moral and ethical values, so that they are judiciously used. It is sad to note that we no more value our scriptures, traditions and rituals and started adapting western practices. On the other hand, please take a look at what they (westerners) feel and say about our knowledge and wisdom.....

I conclude this post by stating............

"IT IS TIME TO REALIZE AND VALUE THE VISION OF OUR ANCIENT SEERS"

Thank you all for reading. Please share your thoughts.
