கந்த சஷ்டி கவசம் அனைவருக்கும் தெரிந்து இருக்கும். பொதுவாக தமிழ் கடவுளான முருகன் மந்திரங்கள் பெரும்பாலும் தமிழிலேயே இருக்கும். அதில் மிக சிறந்த முருகன் ஸ்லோகமே கந்த சஷ்டி கவசம். இதை தினமும் ஒரு முறை சொல்பவர்கள் பலர் இருக்கிறார்கள். இந்த கந்த சஷ்டி கவசத்தில் பெரும்பாலோருக்குத் தெரியாத ஒரு விஷயத்தை இந்தப் பதிவில் சொல்ல விரும்புகிறேன். இந்த வரிகள் உங்கள் அனைவருக்கும் தெரிந்து இருக்கும். ஒரு முறை கீழ்க்கண்ட வரிகளைப் படிக்கவும்.
"'ஐ'யும் 'கிலி'யும் அடைவுடன் 'சௌ'வும்
உய்யொளி 'சௌ'வும் உயிர் 'ஐ'யும் 'கிலி'யும்

மேற்கண்ட வரிகள் பாடலின் ஆரம்பத்தில் வரும்.
"பாலன் தேவராயன் பகர்ந்ததை
காலையில் மாலையில் கருத்துடன் நாளும்
ஆசாரத்துடன் அங்கம் துலக்கி
நேசமுடன் ஒரு நினைவு அதுவாகி
சிந்தை கலங்காது தியானிப்பவர்கள்
ஒரு நாள் முப்பத்து ஆறு உருக்கொண்டு....."
மேற்கண்ட வரிகள் பாடலின் முடிவில் வரும்.
பாலன் தேவராயன் (தேவராய ஸ்வாமிகள் இங்கு தன்னை பாலன் என்று தன்னடக்கத்துடன் சொல்லிக் கொள்கிறார்) என்பவர் பாடி இருப்பதே கந்த சஷ்டி கவசம் என்பது படித்தவுடன் தெரிந்து விடும். இதில் தெரியாத சூக்ஷ்ம விஷயம் என்னவென்றால், "ஒரு நாள் முப்பது ஆறு முறை" என்று சொல்லி இருப்பார். அது என்ன கணக்கு? ஏன் முப்பத்து ஆறு முறை? அங்கு தான் நாம் ஆழமாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய விஷயம் வருகிறது.
இப்போது மேற்கூறிய முதல் பத்தியைப் படித்தால், அதில் "ஐ", "கிலி", "சௌ" என்ற வார்த்தைகள் வருவதைப் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும். இந்த வார்த்தைகள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் முன் பின்னாக மூன்று முறை வரும்.
அதாவது "ஐ" மூன்று முறையும் "கிலி" மூன்று முறையும் "சௌ" மூன்று முறையும் வரும். இங்கே "கிலி" என்பது "பயம்" அன்று. இது சமஸ்க்ரித மூல மந்திரமான "க்லீம்" என்பதைக் குறிக்கும். அதே போன்று "ஐ" என்பது "ஐம்" என்னும் மூல மந்திரத்தையும் "சௌ" என்பது "சௌம்" என்னும் மூல மந்திரத்தையும் குறிக்கும். "ஐம்" "க்லீம்" "சௌம்" என்பதாகும்.
இது திரிபுர சுந்தரி தேவியின் மூல மந்திரம் ஆகும். (முருகன் பார்வதியின் மைந்தன் என்பது அனைவரும் அறிந்ததே). இப்போது ஏன் முப்பத்து ஆறு முறை என்ற கணக்குக்கு வருவோம். இந்த ஒவ்வொரு மூல மந்திரமும் மூன்று முறை வருவதால், முப்பத்தி ஆறு முறை படிக்கும் போது ஒவ்வொரு மந்திரத்தையும் நாம் 108 முறை உச்சரிப்போம். 108 முறை என்பது மந்திர உச்சாடனத்தில் ஒரு முக்கியமான எண்ணாகும்.
ஆகவே கந்த சஷ்டி கவசத்தை நாம் முப்பத்தி ஆறு முறை சொன்னால் நம்மை அறியாமல் நாம் தேவியின் மூல மந்திரங்கள் மூன்றையும் தனித் தனியாக 108 முறை உச்சரித்தவர்கள் ஆகிறோம். அது மட்டும் அல்லாது, ஷண்முகனின் தனி மந்திரமான "ஓம்" என்பதே இங்கு "தனியொளி 'ஒள'" என்று கூறப் படுகிறது. தேவியின் மூல மந்திரங்களுடன் இந்த "ஓம்" என்பதும் சேர்த்து உச்சரிக்கப் படும் போது "குண்டலினி சக்தி" என்பது கிளர்ந்து எழுகிறது. இது யோக சாதனையில் ஒரு முக்கியமான அம்சம் ஆகும்.
இப்படி நாம் மந்திரங்களை மேலோட்டமாகப் பார்க்காமல் அதன் உள்ளார்ந்த அர்த்தங்களைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டு படித்தால் பலன் பன்மடங்காகும். எனக்குத் தெரிந்த வரை விளக்கி இருக்கிறேன். படித்து விட்டு உங்கள் மேலான கருத்துக்களைப் பகிரவும். பதிவைப் படித்தமைக்கு நன்றி.
The word "Shanti" literally means "peace". Shanti Mantras are prayers for peace. As such, they are meant to calm the mind of the one who recites as well as the environment around. Shanti mantras are found in Upanishads and there are many kinds of Shanti Mantras from different Upanishads. These mantras are generally recited at the beginning and end of religious rituals and discourses. They are also recited before pursuing a new education or a new task. These mantras always end with the phrase "AUM Shanti Shanti Shanti". It is mandatory to tell the word "Shanti" thrice as it has an important hidden meaning. Since Shanti mantras are for peace, it is believed that obstacles from three realms are removed by reciting these mantras....
Though there are many "Shanti" mantras, we are going to explore the one from "Krishna Yajurveda Taittriya Upanishad" today. This is a very simple manta and we would have heard this mantra several times. This mantra is specifically recited in "Gurukul" (schools in olden days) before starting the study of scriptures and in this context, it talks about two people, the Guru and the Disciple. It is meant to create peace and tune the mind before undertaking the study. Let us take a look..

Though this mantra is recited before staring a new educational venture, we can chant this mantra daily for calming our mind. We should note that mantras are like secret codes to unlock the potential within us. Mantras are energy based sounds which tunes both our body and mind and brings out our subtle power. Meaning :
I pray to Goddess Saraswati, who is as fair as the jasmine flower, whose beautiful white garland is like frosty dew drops, who is embellished with pretty white attire, whose hands carry the veena and who has the pure white lotus as her throne.
I pray to Goddess Saraswati, who is praised by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and who is always worshiped by the Devas. I offer my prayers to you, mother Saraswati. Please remove my mental dullness, sluggishness and ignorance completely.
The Mantra which we are going to learn today is the "Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra". Before going into the comprehensive details, let us quickly know some of the basic facts about this mantra. This mantra, also known as the "Tryambaka Mantra" is one of the most powerful ancient Sanskrit mantras. The deity invoked here is the three eyed "Lord Shiva" and the purpose of this mantra is to attain enlightenment by conquering death. "Mrityu" = death and "Jaya" = victory.

Sage Markandeya is said to be the founder of this mantra. We all know that Markandeya conquered death by devoting himself to lord Shiva and became immortal. Another legend states that Lord Shiva revealed this mantra to sage Sukracharya. Hence it is sometimes known as Mrita-Sanjeevini mantra. This mantra is found in Shri Rudram Chamakam from the Yajur Veda and also in Rig Veda and Atharva Veda.
Pustivardhanam - One who increases prosperity or welfare, nourishes, strengthens
Urvarukamiva - A kind of cucumber
Bandhanaan - connecting, captivating, binding
Mrtyormuksiya - Release, free, liberate from death
Maamrutaath - Immortality
Interpretation 1 :
"We worship the fragrant, three eyed lord Shiva who fosters and nourishes all beings. May he release us from the cycle of Samsara like how a ripened cucumber is released from its bondage, the creeper. (Like the gardener who separates the ripened cucumber, Lord Shiva, frees the souls from the bondage called samsara). May he liberate us from the fear of death and make us immortal".
Interpretation 2 :

This is a very powerful mantra which is considered to guard a person from fear of death and grant longevity and immortality. Since the power of this mantra is huge and it invokes the fierce form of Lord Rudra (Shiva), great care has to be taken to chant it properly and without errors. This mantra is said to be beneficial for both physical and mental health and has a great healing force. The divine vibrations generated by chanting this mantra wards off a person against evil and negative forces and creates a powerful shield which ensures protection. Chanting this mantra regularly with faith and devotion can :

Guard against any kind of fear
Rejuvenate and heal the senses
Protect from accidents, disasters and other misfortunes

Almost all of us would have heard the famous Vedic verse "Ayathanavan Bhavati". This verse comes in "Mantra Pushpam" - A Vedic chanting, which is considered as the flower of vedic chants. To give a quick intro, this Mantra is found in "Taithreeya Aranyakam" of Yajurveda. Like all other Vedic Mantras, "Mantra Pushpam" also gives a simple meaning at the outset, but more deeper meanings when you ponder over and over. It talks about the source of water, but it has deeper meanings like creation concept, evolution, inter connectivity of elements and cosmos. The above paragraph has a hidden meaning (the last three lines). God is symbolized as "boat" here which helps us to cross the ocean of "samsara". One can get established in the boat (God) by understanding the real truth of the above verses. Refer to this "Thirukkural" where "valluvar" has compared life and death to ocean and how to cross that....
"பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார்

King of kings, We worship you by all means
We worship you, Kubera,
Who fulfills all desires and grants all victories
Bless me and fulfill all my desires
Oh kubera, the king of kings.
As you can see, this last paragraph praises Lord Kubera, who is considered as the regent of north direction and the Lord of wealth. This verse is generally recited by the priests during/after Deeparathana in temples, to get our desires fulfilled.
What ever we need in life, we can only ask God. As such, asking material wealth is also justified (in sanatan dharma) but at the same time, we should seek his blessings for attaining higher spiritual progress, which is the ultimate goal of life. This mantra serves that purpose very well.
In my humble efforts to know the meanings of Mantras, I have started the section "Mantras and Meanings" in this blog. When I thought of adding "Vishnu Sahasranama" in this section, the first notion came to my mind was "Who am I to write about this"? There are quite a few reasons for such thinking. On the first hand, I am not a person who is well-versed in Sanskrit; second : this is a lengthy sloka and it will be tough to learn the full meaning in one day and last, there are many translations already available with word by word meanings. Yet, something drives me to post it today and here I am. But let me brief few points beforehand :
Instead of proceeding with the sloka directly, we will first start with some introductions for better understanding.
Since this is a lengthy sloka, I am planning to add 5 paragraphs or verses each time for making it easy to understand. As such, this is not a complete blog post, but will be updated as and when and I will notify you when it is done.
As always, I will be including many web links from where I compiled the information.
The Manthras are given in English and split up for easy reading. Please do not expect perfect sanskrit way of writing. The numbering of the verses are also given by me only for easy learning and might not match with the numbers in the original sloka.
I will be very happy if readers share their thoughts and knowledge. It is a collective effort and the ultimate aim is to learn this sloka with its meaning.
I pray to Shri Maha Vishnu to give me the motivation and determination to complete this post fully and also to enlighten all of us in this journey.
Vishnu Sahasranamam - A brief overview :
As most of you know, the term "sahasra" in Sanskrit, means 1000. Vishnu Sahasranama literally means the 1000 names of Vishnu . It is found in the "Anushasana parva" of the epic Mahabaratha which continues the theme of "Shanthi Parva". "Anushasana" can be referred as "Book of instructions" of Book of precepts". It has 2 sub parvas and 168 chapters. Bhishma, in his death bed, is surrounded by great sages Vasishta, Maithreya, Sanathkumara, Valmiki, Kapila and Narada and also by the Pandavas. Yudishtra asks for a counsel for which Bhishma gives answers. It includes duties of the King, officials of a kingdom and men and women. It also includes the importance of cows, their importance to household's food security, agriculture and wealth. Chapter 149 of this Anushasana parva recites "Vishnu Sahasranama" and in the list of 1000 names of Vishnu are the names of Shiva, Sharva, Sthanu, Ishana and Rudra.

Adi Sankaracharya in Bhaja Govindam - Verse 27 :
"Geyam gita nama sahasram dhyeam sripathi rupamajasram
